Who We Are

North Carolinians Against Gun Violence is made up of 1500 member families across the state. NCGV board members are selected by our nominating committee and elected by our general membership. Our Executive Committee is made up of our: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 2 At-large Representatives. Our 2010-2011 Board

Hilton Cancel
Mr. Cancel is a retired police officer and sits on the board of NCGV, El Pueblo, and Raleigh's Gang Taskforce

Charles Grubb
Mr. Grubb owns and operates a homeowner association management company. He served a term on the Durham City Council.

Russell Holloway
Mr. Holloway serves as the Associate Dean of the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering

Lisa Kukla
Ms. Kukla currently is a school teacher with the Durham County Public Schools and is the 2006 recipient of the NCGV Citizen of the Year Award to honor her bravery when, as a Chapel Hill high school teacher, she and a student were held hostage at gunpoint by a student

Sandy Ogburn
Ms. Ogburn currently works for a small non-profit assisting high school drop outs to attain a GED. She previously served two terms on the Durham City Council and serves on several non-profit and community based boards.

Jason Langberg
Mr. Langberg is an attorney with Legal Aid of NC, working primarily on issues involve public education.

Russell Johnson
Mr. Johnson is an Advocates for Justice attorney based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Doug Handler
Mr. Handler works for Cisco Systems with the Internet Business Solutions Group.

Jennifer Synder
Ms. Synder coordinates Durham County's Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Jackie Kaufman
Ms. Kaufman is a Nurse Practitioner based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Effie Steele
Ms. Steele serves as the facilitator of the Religious Coalition for a Non-Violent Durham.

Nancy Verboon
Ms. Verboon works for the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Kim Anglin
Mr. Anglin is a Certified Public Accountant based in Durham, North Carolina.

Approximately one NC Child is killed by a gun every week.

In NC Guns account for 58% of all child violent deaths.

In 2007 in North Carolina 40% of youth suicides were committed with a firearm.
