Safe Storage

Safe storage of firearms is one the best ways to reduce the risk of firearm suicide in your home. (As well as accidental firearm death.)

The Minutes Matter program recommends the following steps to safely store firearms in homes with children and teens:

  • Store firearms unloaded and locked.

  • Use a gun safe, lock box, trigger lock or a chamber lock.

  • Store and lock ammunition in a separate place.

  • Remove firearms from your home if you have a depressed or suicidal family member.

  • Ask family and friends to follow these safe storage steps.

  • Ask about firearm storage at homes your children visit.
