Our Hearts are in Kalamazoo

On Saturday, February 20th, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a 45-year old man went on a rampage killing six innocent people and seriously wounding two others.

Once again we find ourselves facing tragedy.  Since the start of the New Year there have been 43 mass shootings. We are determined to stop this from becoming the new normal.

The devastation inflicted upon this community is tragic and the lives of the victim’s families have been shattered.  We vow to stand in solidarity with Kalamazoo against gun violence and demand that our lawmakers do more to keep our communities safe.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this senseless act of violence. We pledge to take action to #preventgunviolence in their names.

Board of County Commissioners discusses possible firearm regulations discuss possible regulations

"Complaints of successive and irresponsible shooting at odd hours led to a discussion of firearm regulations at the Orange County Board of Commissioners meeting Feb. 16. A proposed amendment was presented at the meeting that would place restrictions on where firearms can be discharged from and the time of day at which they can be discharged. It would have required any firearms discharged to be directed to a projectile-proof backstop. Residents would only be allowed to discharge firearms from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m."

"NEWTON, Kan. — Three people were killed at a manufacturing plant in Hesston, Kan., on Thursday by a man who had driven through at least two towns shooting a gun out of his car window, the police said."

It is time to ban assault rifles like the one that was used in this shooting spree.

Our thought and prayers go out to these family members and their community.

Gun Violence in America is Out of Control

"The United States loses far more people to gun violence — homicidal, suicidal, accidental — than almost any other country, and there is one reason: the easy availability of guns.

"So far in this very young year, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, there have been 6,886 incidents of gun violence in the United States, killing 1,781 people and injuring 3,475, as of Monday afternoon. Of those killed or injured, 74 were under age 12."

A Must-Read Report On Guns And Domestic Violence

"To quote the report: ‘Guns and domestic violence are a lethal combination.’ The report cites the fact that there is a five-fold increase in deaths when either person (usually a man) in a domestic dispute has access to a gun. If the report had given all the scholarly citations which exist to support this statement, we could spend lots of time scrolling down to get to the rest of the text. NRA nonsense to the contrary (see below), what happens when a gun is part of an argument between domestic partners is an indisputable fact."

Impact of Justice Scalia's Decison on Guns

"Overturning Heller is not only unlikely, but unnecessary to the cause of reasonable gun control.

That’s because even as Heller held in favor of the “individual” right to keep and bear arms, it emphasized that such a right — like all other constitutional rights — is subject to reasonable regulation."

Easy access to guns helped me commit murder. I’ve changed, but the loopholes remain

"I can’t help but think about what would have happened that night if I hadn’t had access to that gun."
