Gun Violence in America is Out of Control

"The United States loses far more people to gun violence — homicidal, suicidal, accidental — than almost any other country, and there is one reason: the easy availability of guns.

"So far in this very young year, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, there have been 6,886 incidents of gun violence in the United States, killing 1,781 people and injuring 3,475, as of Monday afternoon. Of those killed or injured, 74 were under age 12."

Domestic Violence and Guns

"More women are killed by intimate partners in the United States than by any other group of people. It's not strangers, friends or acquaintances who pose the biggest threat to women's lives: It's the men they date and marry.

According to FBI and state crime data analyzed by the Associated Press, at least 6,875 people were fatally shot by romantic partners from 2006 to 2014. 80% of those victims were women."

Rep. Ellison Floor Statement on 1 Year Anniversary of Chapel Hill Shooting

"These murders are heartbreaking and they should be heartbreaking to every American. They show us a stark reality that bigotry is alive and well and that good people have to stand against it. That hate speech and scapegoating have real life consequences. Children are bullied in school, houses of worship are vandalized, and people are killed for the way they dress and how they pray." - Congressman Keith Ellison
