It is with a heavy heart that I write to you again about another gun-related mass murder. This time it was at a Texas church and 26 people are dead, many of them children. Three of the five deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history have occurred within the last year.
On December 6th at 10am, the Senate Judiciary Committee is planning to hold a hearing on bump stocks, a firearm accessory used by the Las Vegas mass shooter last month that enabled his guns to fire more like automatic weapons.
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis is a Judiciary Committee member. Senator Tillis needs to hear from you today that banning bump stocks is an important first step and that we need to do more.
Specifically, we need also need to ban military style assault weapons and do more to prevent domestic violence abusers from obtaining guns. We know that the Texas shooter used a military style assault weapon and had a history of domestic violence. In 54% of mass shootings from 2009 to 2016 the shooters killed intimate partners or other family members. 25% of all mass shooting fatalities were children. Yet federal law allows misdemeanor stalkers and domestic abusers in dating relationships to get guns (the boyfriend loophole).
You can reach Senator Tillis at 202-224-6342. Here is a sample message to use:
“I am calling to ask the senator to help prevent future mass killings by working to ban bump stocks, ban military style assault weapons and close the boyfriend loophole. These mass shootings must be addressed with common sense and effective laws such as these. I urge the senator to do all that he can to stop gun violence.”
Your calls will help Senator Tillis stand up to the corporate gun lobby to show that protecting the safety of Americans is our top priority.
Carl Hughes signed Ban Military-Style Assault Weapons 2017-12-06 10:38:48 -0500Our country has a gun problem. We have too many guns! That is the cause, too many guns, and too much easy access. We should rigorously enforce background checks for ALL gun sales, transfers, and transactions. Taking money from the NRA makes you complicit in all of the gun violence that is plaguing our country.
As you likely know, the Las Vegas shooter used military-style assault weapons, some modified with bump stocks to allow them to fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger, to murder 58 people and wound nearly 500 more. The Texas shooter also used a military-style assault weapon.
They weren't the first ones to use these weapons to massacre Americans. Shooters in San Bernardino, Sandy Hook, and other mass shootings also used assault weapons. These weapons are designed to kill as many people as possible as efficiently as possible. They should not be available to civilians.
It is well past time for Congress the United States to act.
Please tell our Senators to ban military-style assault weapons now. Add your name to the petition today.200 signatures
Dear Senators Burr and Tillis:
On Sunday, October 1, 2017, 58 victims were senselessly massacred and nearly 500 victims were injured in Las Vegas in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. On November 5th, 26 people were killed in Sutherland Springs, TX, and between 12 to 14 of the people killed or injured in the attack were children.
With easy access to military-style assault weapons, high capacity ammunition magazines, and bump stocks, one man turned a place of celebration and joy at a music festival into a war zone filled with terror, devastation and terrible loss. Another man destroyed an entire community in a place of worship.
Military-style semi-automatic assault weapons are designed to efficiently kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time available. There is absolutely no reason for assault rifles, assault pistols, and assault shotguns to be sold on the civilian market.
Congress did not take action after Aurora, Sandy Hook, Orlando and many other devastating mass shooting incidents.
We ask that you address this carnage now with an effective ban on the civilian use of these weapons. Military-style assault weapons, high capacity magazines and bump stocks do not belong in our homes, our streets, our schools, our malls, our movie theaters, our places of worship, or in any of our other gathering places. Now is the time to act.
