  • signed Ban Military-Style Assault Weapons 2017-10-16 10:51:48 -0400
I have sent personal letters and signed many petitions to Senator Burr and Senator Tillis in the past to no avail. How many people must die before common sense takes over? It is sad to see that money from the NRA takes precedence over people’s lives. If Sandy Hook didn’t open your eyes I’m not hopeful anything ever will.

    Ban Military-Style Assault Weapons

As you likely know, the Las Vegas shooter used military-style assault weapons, some modified with bump stocks to allow them to fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger, to murder 58 people and wound nearly 500 more.  The Texas shooter also used a military-style assault weapon.

They weren't the first ones to use these weapons to massacre Americans. Shooters in San Bernardino, Sandy Hook, and other mass shootings also used assault weapons. These weapons are designed to kill as many people as possible as efficiently as possible. They should not be available to civilians.

It is well past time for Congress the United States to act.

Please tell our Senators to ban military-style assault weapons now. Add your name to the petition today.

    Dear Senators Burr and Tillis:

On Sunday, October 1, 2017, 58 victims were senselessly massacred and nearly 500 victims were injured in Las Vegas in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. On November 5th, 26 people were killed in Sutherland Springs, TX, and between 12 to 14 of the people killed or injured in the attack were children.

With easy access to military-style assault weapons, high capacity ammunition magazines, and bump stocks, one man turned a place of celebration and joy at a music festival into a war zone filled with terror, devastation and terrible loss. Another man destroyed an entire community in a place of worship.

Military-style semi-automatic assault weapons are designed to efficiently kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time available. There is absolutely no reason for assault rifles, assault pistols, and assault shotguns to be sold on the civilian market.

Congress did not take action after Aurora, Sandy Hook, Orlando and many other devastating mass shooting incidents.

We ask that you address this carnage now with an effective ban on the civilian use of these weapons. Military-style assault weapons, high capacity magazines and bump stocks do not belong in our homes, our streets, our schools, our malls, our movie theaters, our places of worship, or in any of our other gathering places. Now is the time to act.

    Thank you.

Thank President Obama for Saving Lives

President Obama is taking Executive Action to narrow the gunshow loophole and enforce existing laws on the books. The action to clarify who "engaged in the business" of selling guns (and who is therefore required to perform background checks) will greatly improve the background check system and save lives.

Sign the card to thank President Obama for taking action and let him know you'll keep working to prevent gun violence!

    President Obama:

Thank you for taking action to reduce gun violence to narrow the gun show loophole by enforcing laws that are already on the books and working to clarify who is “engaged in the business” of selling guns and who is therefore required to perform background checks.

Because of the voices of Americans across the country, including many of our courageous elected officials who signed letters urging this action, the work of gun violence prevention advocates, and because of your decision to act, our families will be safer.

We know that this won't stop all shootings, but it's a big step! Continuing to organizing locally for state-based action will help finish the job, and you can count on me to continue to advocate for progress.

    Sincerely,
